Brussels Airport invests €52 million in new passenger boarding bridges

Airport operator, Brussels Airport, is to spend a total amount of €52 million on new passenger boarding bridges.

It announced on Wednesday that these are intended for Terminal B. This investment will enable the national airport to accommodate the Airbus A380, the largest commercial aeroplane in the world, if an airline requests to operate such an aircraft into and out of the airport.

The airport will replace 24 passenger boarding bridges from Terminal B, dating back to 1992, with new equipment. This investment proves to be necessary owing to modern aircraft becoming increasingly larger.

Two-thirds of new passenger boarding bridges will be made up of a dual bridge “offering increasing comfort to passengers, and greater operational efficiency for companies.” Gates 31 and 33 will be equipped with a triple passenger boarding bridge, specifically designed for the A380, but which can also be used for other large aircraft (for example the A330, the A350, the Boeing 777 and the Boeing 787). The dual and triple bridges are already in the process of being installed from this week.

The replacement of 22 other passenger boarding bridges will begin from the end of 2018. The operation, which will take place in several phases, is scheduled to come to an end in 2022.
