28% of the pupils are at least two years behind their secondary course according to the Social Barometer 2017 of the Brussels Region. The baromoter was published today.
As with many other elements of the barometer, the disparity between the municipalities is significant. Students in for example Saint-Josse-ten-Node (39%) are much more affected by this delay than those in Watermael-Boitsfort (12%).
The difference is already apparent in the first cycle of secondary education, with 24% of Saint-Josse students lagging behind by at least two years, while the proportion is only 5% in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert.
It should also be noted that about one in six boys aged 18-24 dropped out off school before graduating from upper secondary education. Among girls, the ratio is one to seven.
Regardless of their age, those without the CESS diploma (Certificat d’Enseignement Secondaire Supérieur) have more difficulty integrating in the labour market and 31% of them are unemployed.
