Foreign Ministry issues travel warning for western Caribbean, Florida

Belgium’s Foreign Ministry has called on people planning to travel to the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba, Jamaica and Florida to postpone their trips where possible, so as to avoid being caught up in Hurricane Irma, which is sweeping the region.

Irma, a category 5 hurricane, has already made landfall in the Dominican Republic. Haiti, Cuba, Jamaica and the U.S. state of Florida are also in its path.

“It is advisable to contact your travel agency and/or airline since flights could be postponed or cancelled if weather conditions and/or damage caused by the hurricane to infrastructure prevent air travel,” the Ministry said on its website. “Persons already there are advised to monitor the situation through the media and to follow strictly the instructions of the local authorities.”
