Chelsea hits and misses of 2016/17 so far: Diego Costa putting Branislav Ivanovic to shame

Seven games into the season and Chelsea fans are still left wondering if Antonio Conte is the right man to steer the Abramovich ship.

Three victories in his opening three games was enough for some to forget the misery of last season’s dismal Premier League title defence. However, defeats to close rivals Liverpool and Arsenal have left the door open to doubt.

Struggling at times to find an identity for this team, Conte managed to get back to winning ways against Hull in Chelsea’s last outing by reverting to his favoured 3-5-2 formation in a bid to find some source of stability.

Taking the time to reflect on the Italian’s opening few weeks, we highlight the players that have helped or hindered Conte’s revolution.

Hit: Diego Costa

After a miserable season last year and rumours of discontent over the summer, Diego Costa did not return to Atletico Madrid and the Chelsea fans will be delighted.

Finally channelling that aggression in a productive manner, the Spain international has been in inspired form so far this season and has six goals to his name already.

The more you hate him and want him to miss every opportunity in front of goal, the more he scores. That’s how it works. That’s Diego Costa.

Miss: Gary Cahill

Oh Gary, when will these mistakes come to an end?

Cahill, who will admit to many who ask that for years he’s played understudy to Chelsea captain John Terry, has had a pretty horrid start to the season.

High profile errors against Arsenal, Liverpool, Swansea and Leicester have left even the staunchest of Cahill/Chelsea supporters questioning his ability.
