Belgian airline plans China flights

The country’s Le Soir newspaper reported this week that Air Belgium is planning to launch its first flights in June 2017, with up to three destinations in China on the cards. These are likely to be secondary Chinese cities, according to the report.

Air Belgium is being set up by a group of entrepreneurs including Niky Terzakis, former manager of the now-defunct TNT Airways. Terzakis told Le Soir that Air Belgium will be “a regular passenger airline with low fares”.

As a cargo carrier, TNT operated flights from Liege Airport to destinations in China, including Shanghai, Chongqing and Hong Kong. Air Belgium’s home base has not yet been decided, but Liege is one of the airports being considered, along with Brussels and Charleroi.

Hainan Airlines is the only airline currently flying direct between Belgium and China, with its Beijing-Brussels route.
