Four suspicious fires and one victim in critical condition in Antwerp

Four suspicious fires broke out within four hours in Antwerp on Friday night.

Four people were evacuated from one of the buildings, including one in critical condition. An investigation has been opened because criminal intent can not be ruled out.

The firefighters received the first call at 11:08 pm and went to extinguish a burning stroller that had caught alight in a lobby.

The second call from the city centre was received at midnight. A building was declared uninhabitable after a fire in the staircase. Four people were evacuated, including one in critical condition.

The firemen had to intervene again at around 03:00, when a cargo bicycle leaning against a facade also caught fire. A nearby facade was also damaged. Almost at the same time, in a neighboring street, a mattress placed against a facade also caught fire.

An inquiry has been opened to determine whether there is a connection between the fires. Criminal intent can not be excluded, according to firefighters and the Antwerp police.
