Record amount of property seized and confiscated from criminals

Services belonging to the Central Organ for Seizure and Confiscation (OSCS) closed a record number of cases last year.

They handled 12,138 cases in 2016, compared to 8,119 in 2015. The number of seizures and confiscations has continued to go up, with 8,776 this year and 9,213 last year. On Thursday, De Tijd revealed that’s a lot more than 10 years ago (there were 5,263 in 2007).

The Justice Minister Koen Geens (CD&V) says these figures show crime doesn’t pay.

Thanks to the Justice department’s efforts to confiscate property from criminals, more than half a billion euros worth has been confiscated. No less than 173 million euros worth was confiscated in a single big international money laundering case.

A large number of vehicles, jewellery, paintings and other property has been seized. This includes a luxury yacht from the former Optima Bank, Jeroen Piquer.
