Exhibition pulls Belgian female Musicians out of the shadows

After years of underrepresentation, art gallery in Brussels will attempt to champion and acknowledge that the work of female artists, setting their creations on display in an exhibition launching Friday.

‘Girls. Underexposed’ will exhibit the work of dozens of female celebrities as it tries to promote the female contribution to the arts, all the while avoiding falling into the snare of tokenism, curator Bénédicte Bouton said in an interview with all the Brussels Times.

Section of this Belfius Art Collection, Bouton reported the display was made to highlight the inequalities women faced, and continue to face, in the art world.

“We wished to demonstrate that it is still important to provide women prominence, since there is certainly some progress however it’s still not okay yet,”  said Bouton.

The display will also emphasize the fight for historical female celebrities, and also the bravery it took to devote to their artistic passions.

‘Girls. Underexposed’ high lights that the women who”struggled to create an income in their passion and share it with the people… this travel through time evokes the barriers they have undergone and the pivotal phases,” she explained.

For the curator, it is very important that exhibition increases awareness and incites long-term change, as opposed to being a token party of female performers.

“We hope to inform people to realise that women artists aren’t always known… you would like to get the people aware that we still have work to do.”

Held in the Belfius memorial at Brussels, the display will display the works of female artists from the 16th Century to the current alongside individuals of the contemporary male artists, with the goal being to make sure that the display does not produce a”ghetto effect” for female artists, said Bouton.
