Figures from Three Brussels universities show that almost half of all workers in Brussels come to the city from outside the region.
Some 708,000 people work in the Belgian capital. In 2016 345,000 of these commuted in to work from outside the region. 31% of Brussels employees live in Flanders, 17% in Wallonia. With over 15% of the Belgian workforce active in Brussels the capital is an important employer. Only 10% of the population lives here.
On average people living in Brussels will make a 3.6km trip to work. For people from beyond the region this is 35km on average. Half of all commuters still use the car. The bike is more popular among the high skilled, who shun public transport more. The low skilled are more likely to carpool.
