VLM that operates from Antwerp Airport announced the scrapping of all but two of its services at the beginning of August. Only flights to London City and Zurich remained. These too are now also being discontinued.
Above all the demise of the link to the London City is seen as a blow for the airport. Contacts are already underway with other operators eager to operate on the route. Until then capacity on flights to Southend in Essex will be beefed up.
VLM represented 45% of capacity at the airport, though only 17% of the airport’s turnover. TUI fly and flybe carry more passengers.
VLM was created in 1993 and went to the wall a first time in 2016. It re-emerged last October with services to London City. VLM provided employment for 85 people. Passengers whose flights were cancelled will be reimbursed.
