No decision to be made on reform of family allowances in Brussels before next year

Decisions regarding the reform of family allowances in Brussels will not be made before next year.
The Brussels government expects to have the conclusions of the study contracted with the University of Antwerp sometime in 2017, declared Tuesday Brussels minister Pascal Smet (sp.a), the person in charge of this matter in the college of Commission Communautaire, alongside Céline Fremault (cdH).

The two ministers were questioned at the Brussels Parliament by Arnaud Verstraete (Groen) and Caroline Désir (PS) on the matter of progress of the reform of family allowances in the capital. Flanders has already established the position of its plan, but this has not yet been done in Wallonia and Brussels.

According to Pascal Smet, the Brussels ministers commissioned a study to consider the particular characteristics of Brussels, for 2017. “We will ask for more speed and we will decide with full knowledge on the matter and not before,” stated the minister.

On her part, Céline Fremault made it understood that it is not simply a matter of conforming to measures adopted elsewhere. She added that Flanders adopted a model without prior consultation. The minister however recalled that a cooperation agreement between the entities concerned will be needed to allow the free movement of people.
