Fairness tax: the hour of truth has arrived for the Michel government according to the Socialist Party

The Socialist Party expects the federal government to take swift action to correct the fairness tax, which the Court of Justice of the European Union has just ruled on.

According to the Socialists, the Court validates the basis of the system set up under the previous government and only requires a technical adaptation to comply with the directive on financial flows between parent companies and their subsidiaries.

When the Advocate General of the European Court submitted his opinion, the Minister of Finance, Johan Van Overtveldt (N-VA), referred to “a corpse falling out of the closet”.

“The ruling shows the extent to which the Minister of Finance was mistaken, whereas the European Court of Justice does not call the tax into question, instead calling for a technical correction. The Socialist Party wanted and obtained this tax, and today the hour of truth has come for the Michel government to either choose the path of fiscal justice and to correct the system, or to justify the multinational groups that organise themselves in such a way that they manage to avoid paying taxes in Belgium”, said MP Ahmed Laaouej.

The Socialist Party tabled a bill to make the correction. Mr Laaouej intends to call for its urgent examination.
