Brussels has become more expensive for expats

Brussels has become more expensive for expats to live. According to the annual list of cities in the world and how much it costs to live in them, compiled by consultant Mercer, Brussels is the 67th most expensive city in the world for expats. This is 37 places on the 104th place in Brussels last year’s list.

Each year Mercer compiles a list of the top 200 cities based on how expensive it is to live in them as an expat. The consultancy takes into account factors such as renting and buying real estate, transport costs, the price of food and the cost of leisure activities.

As a result of the relatively high value of the euro compared to a number of other major world currencies, Eurozone cities like Brussels are higher up this year’s list than was the case when Mercer compiled its previous list in 2017. Meanwhile, cities in the United States became relatively less expensive due to the fall in the value of the US$.

At the top of the world’s most expensive cities is Hong Kong, followed by Tokyo and Zurich.
