Toon Aerts won the Belgian cyclocross championships at Kruibeke on Sunday. The rider raced to the front on one of the most arduous circuits in recent years.
Protracted rain had turned the route of the race into a pool of mud. Riders struggled to complete the course in the East Flemish town of Kruibeke slipping and sliding throughout. Wout van Aert had won the event three times in a row. In the lead he may have hoped to make it a fourth but it was not to be. Toon Aerts managed to overtake him and crossing the finish 57 seconds ahead of the outgoing champion to land the title.
