Fairness tax – Budget implications could be considerable

“A corpse emerges from the closet,” stated Thursday Finance Minister Johan Van Overtveldt.

The statement followed the opinion expressed by the Advocate General of the European Court of Justice on the Equity Tax (Fairness Tax). According to the minister, the consequences, including budgetary ones, may be considerable.

“We have always had many concerns regarding this tax. Now the fears have been confirmed by the Advocate General of the European Court,” he explained.

In the minister’s opinion, “there are better ways to make the company tax fairer for small- and medium-sized companies.”

The government is presently considering – in a tense atmosphere among partners of the majority – a tax reform for companies.

The minister is awaiting the decision of the Court; he has not provided an estimate of the budgetary consequences.
