A Hong Kong based tycoon has donated £1 million to London’s Garden Bridge project, it was revealed today.

Victor Lo, the chairman and chief executive of Gold Peak Industries, was among the names of donors disclosed under freedom of information requests.

Fashion house Burberry has given £250,000 towards the £175 million Thames crossing which is set to become a unique attraction. The Garden Bridge Trust needs to raise another £52 million to deliver the horticultural oasis designed by Thomas Heatherwick.

Theresa May’s new government backed the scheme last week and said it would continue to underwrite the £175 million River Thames crossing.

But ministers have refused a request from the Garden Bridge Trust to increase the level of underwriting “insurance” from £9 million to £15 million, leaving the trustees under pressure to keep fund raising to schedule.
