Flemish PM: “The situation is precarious in the extreme”

The Flemish Prime Minister, Geert Bourgeois (Flemish nationalist) has spoken of his hopes that the UK Parliament will approve the EU withdrawal agreement. Mr Bourgeois conceded that it would be a work of titanic proportions but added that he hoped UK MPs would show a sense of responsibility.

After hearing reactions from UK MPs to the technical agreement reached between the UK and the EU the Flemish leader said: “The situation is precarious in the extreme. This is such an important moment for the prosperity of the people of Britain, but also for our own prosperity, for our 16,000 small and medium-sized enterprises and the people they employ.”

Mr Bourgeois believes this is the best possible deal in the present circumstances as the agreement seems to be based on a customs union with one of Flanders’ most important partners. The Flemish government is still preparing for all eventualities though, including what is dubbed the “horror scenario” if the UK leaves the EU without any agreement. On Friday Flemish cabinet ministers will discuss a plan of action.
