Over and out for Belgian clubs in Europe

It was a disastrous evening for our country’s Europa League clubs on Thursday evening. Club Brugge were outclassed and out played, losing the return leg of their tie against Red Bull Salzburg 4-0. Later in the evening KRC Genk threw away a one-goal lead to lose the return leg of their tie against Slavia Prague 1-4.

The results mean that no Belgian club has survived the first knock out stage of the Europa League.

Champions given a hiding in Salzburg
Despite taking a one-goal advantage into the return leg of their tie against Red Bull Salzburg, Club Brugge were soundly beaten 5-2 on aggregate and 4-0 on the night by the Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg. Salzburg’s Schlager opened the scoring on 18 minutes.

2 goals from Pakson Daka on 30 and 44 minutes made for a half time score of 3-0 to the Austrians. Munas Dabbur’s goal in the 5th minute of stoppage time made for a humiliating score in Salzburg’s favour of 4-0 on the night and 5-2 on aggregate.

Genk disappoint in front of home crowd
The league leaders KRC Genk went in to the second leg of their tie against Slavia Prague on level terms.

A goal on 10 minutes from Trossard put the Limburgers 1-0. All they had to do was to stop the Czechs from scoring. However, they were unable to do so and Slavia levelled the score on 23 minutes through Coufal. Second half goals from Traoré on 53 minutes and Skoda on 64 and 68 minutes made for a full time score of 1-4 to the Czechs.
