There are more than 50,000 radicalised Muslims in Europe, 2,000 of them are in Belgium

There are currently 500 people that want to go fight in Syria, as well as a group of 2,000 radicalised individuals, living in Belgium.
There are around 50,000 radicalised individuals in the whole of Europe. “This is just an estimate, as there could be 1,000 more or 1,000 less. But they are a big problem for Security Services”, Gilles de Kerckhove, the EU Coordinator for the fight against terrorism , told De Morgen on Saturday.

Mr de Kerchkove says it is difficult to know how to tell who is dangerous. He also said it was doubtful someone could be deradicalised. “A radical person will hold onto their beliefs. We can try at least to make sure that person doesn’t use violence to spread their beliefs by force”.

To do this, he spoke about a University course for imams, a social deradicalisation programme (not just in prisons), or developing a European Islam.
